Huskie Badger DRAFTING FOR THEVikings

Draft Grade — Vikings

FutureB-
The Vikings left with their quarterback, and a B- to match. Nobody else had Kedon Slovis anywhere near Round 7, Pick 12. The Vikings did, by 73 spots, and that gap is the whole story.
So much rides on J.J. McCarthy that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. The Cooper pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.
That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick Analysis
Pick11
Rnd1
J.J. McCarthy
This one needs a full-page explanation: J.J. McCarthy in the 11th overall pick, miles early. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick33
Rnd2
Tyler Guyton
Fair-plus on Tyler Guyton, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick65
Rnd3
Edgerrin Cooper
Nice patience on Edgerrin Cooper, who had no business lasting to pick 65. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick108
Rnd4
Mekhi Wingo
Mekhi Wingo at No. 108 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It fills a real need, too.
Pick129
Rnd4
Christian Jones
Christian Jones at slot 129 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick157
Rnd5
Marist Liufau
They paid up for Marist Liufau at Round 5, Pick 21 when waiting would have done the job. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick167
Rnd5
Walter Rouse
They did well to land Walter Rouse in Round 5, Pick 31, just ahead of his grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick177
Rnd6
Cody Schrader
They paid sticker price for Cody Schrader in slot 177, and that is fine. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick230
Rnd7
Kimani Vidal
A big swing on Kimani Vidal at No. 230, well ahead of any board in the building. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick232
Rnd7
Kedon Slovis
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Kedon Slovis. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick240
Rnd7
Donovan Jennings
Donovan Jennings in the 240th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
