Draft Grade — Commanders
Overall A-
ValueC+ NeedB TradesA+ FutureA+
The Commanders found their guy under center in McCarthy: A-.

They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. J.J. McCarthy is the Commanders' quarterback, full stop. They executed a plan and it shows in the A-.

The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. The Suamataia reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade.

A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want.

In the end it comes back to J.J. McCarthy, and a haul good enough to build on right away.

Pick Analysis
Pick14 Rnd1 J.J. McCarthy
They liked J.J. McCarthy enough to skip the value, taking him in slot 14. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick36 Rnd2 Kingsley Suamataia
Kingsley Suamataia at pick 36 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick40 Rnd2 Tyler Nubin
Tyler Nubin at the 40th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick43 Rnd2 Kamari Lassiter
Kamari Lassiter in Round 2, Pick 11 is fair value, right on his grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick45 Rnd2 Chris Braswell
No edge and no loss on Chris Braswell in No. 45; it is a wash and a sensible one. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick67 Rnd3 Patrick Paul
No drama and no debate, Patrick Paul went about where he belonged in the 67th overall pick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick74 Rnd3 Ja'Lynn Polk
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Ja'Lynn Polk. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick78 Rnd3 Cade Stover
Cade Stover in pick No. 78 lands just on the right side of the ledger. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick100 Rnd3 Cam Hart
Cam Hart at the 100th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick150 Rnd5 Mason McCormick
Nothing to complain about; Mason McCormick went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick152 Rnd5 Jacob Cowing
Jacob Cowing at the Round 5 slot nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick168 Rnd5 Marist Liufau
Marist Liufau in Round 5, Pick 32 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick175 Rnd5 Dillon Johnson
A quiet steal in No. 175: Dillon Johnson for less than the market said. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
