Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Packers
Overall
B-
ValueC
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
A sensible, unshowy class lands the Packers a B-. The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Packers reached some 143 spots for Tahj Washington, and value like that does not grow back.
Brade at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. The Solomon pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with quarterback and tight end still on the board. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick25
Rnd1
Quinyon Mitchell
In Round 1, Pick 25 they get a potential shutdown corner, reach and all. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick41
Rnd2
Kris Jenkins
No drama and no debate, Kris Jenkins went about where he belonged in the 41st pick. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick57
Rnd2
Edgerrin Cooper
They paid sticker price for Edgerrin Cooper in the Round 2 slot, and that is fine. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick88
Rnd3
Ray Davis
Ray Davis at slot 88 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick91
Rnd3
Javon Solomon
A want over a need in pick No. 91: Javon Solomon adds an OLB-EDGE while quarterback and tight end keeps waiting.
Pick125
Rnd4
Sataoa Laumea
Sataoa Laumea in pick 125 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick135
Rnd4
Beau Brade
They will replay Beau Brade at the 135th pick for years; that is how good the value is. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick203
Rnd6
Charles Turner III
A wild overpay on Charles Turner III in the Round 6 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick217
Rnd6
Gabe Hall
Gabe Hall in pick 217 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick219
Rnd6
Tahj Washington
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Tahj Washington. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick246
Rnd7
Ja'Had Carter
Ja'Had Carter at pick No. 246 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
