Draft Grade — Raiders
Overall
B-
ValueB-
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
Mendoza is the plan now, and the Raiders grade out a B-. After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Raiders committed. Fernando Mendoza is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline.
The cost of the Black reach is exactly the players who went right after him. That is a cornerback worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. With edge rusher and offensive lineman unsolved, spending premium capital on safety is the choice that costs them.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick Analysis
Pick1
Rnd1
Fernando Mendoza
In the Round 1 slot they get the arm they will build around. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick36
Rnd2
Denzel Boston
They did well to land Denzel Boston in the 36th overall pick, just ahead of his grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick67
Rnd3
Domonique Orange
They paid sticker price for Domonique Orange in No. 67, and that is fine. The roster fit checks out.
Pick102
Rnd4
Zakee Wheatley
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Zakee Wheatley at Round 4, Pick 2. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick117
Rnd4
Genesis Smith
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Genesis Smith adds a safety and leaves edge rusher and offensive lineman untouched.
Pick134
Rnd4
Will Lee III
Will Lee III is a better player than pick 134 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick175
Rnd5
J'Mari Taylor
A wild overpay on J'Mari Taylor in pick No. 175, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick185
Rnd6
Kaelon Black
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Kaelon Black. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick208
Rnd6
Riley Nowakowski
A premium they did not need to pay, Riley Nowakowski a notch or two before his time. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick219
Rnd7
Ephesians Prysock
Ephesians Prysock in the 219th pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
