Draft Grade — Raiders
Overall
D-
ValueB-
NeedB
TradesF
FutureB-
A passer of the future in Mendoza, and a D-, for the Raiders. The Raiders torched the value chart for Lander Barton, taking him 34 spots sooner than anyone had him slotted.
Fernando Mendoza is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. Getting Daniels where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
That tight end hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.
Pick Analysis
Pick1
Rnd1
Fernando Mendoza
In slot 1 they get a passer to set the clock by at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick29
Rnd1
Kayden McDonald
In pick 29 they get an anchor for the defensive front. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick36
Rnd2
Zion Young
Zion Young in No. 36 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick61
Rnd2
Olaivavega Ioane
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Olaivavega Ioane in the 61st overall pick, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick67
Rnd3
Derrick Moore
Derrick Moore in pick No. 67 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick94
Rnd3
Will Lee III
Will Lee III at the Round 3 slot is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick102
Rnd4
Zakee Wheatley
They robbed the room for Zakee Wheatley here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick117
Rnd4
Monroe Freeling
Monroe Freeling at the 117th overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick134
Rnd4
Lander Barton
Lander Barton at the Round 4 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick167
Rnd5
Quinten Joyner
They reached into another round for Quinten Joyner, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick174
Rnd5
CJ Daniels
CJ Daniels in Round 5, Pick 36 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
