Draft Grade — Bengals
Overall
C+
ValueC
NeedB-
TradesB-
FutureB-
A mixed bag for the Bengals, and a C+ to match. You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Bengals did exactly that with Tyler Batty in No. 193. A weekend of give and take that grades a C+.
With cornerback, tight end and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on edge rusher is the choice that costs them. A whole weekend of picks and cornerback is somehow still a want. Job largely done: interior defensive lineman settled and 2 of 8 of the wish list covered.
The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
If Mike Green and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick Analysis
Pick17
Rnd1
Mike Green
In pick No. 17 they get a disruptor off the edge, though they paid up to get him.
Pick49
Rnd2
Alfred Collins
A straight-up fair deal on Alfred Collins at pick 49, value and slot in agreement. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick81
Rnd3
Isaiah Bond
Fair-plus on Isaiah Bond, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick119
Rnd4
Jah Joyner
A surprising call. With cornerback, tight end and other spots still to address, they spent Round 4, Pick 17 on Jah Joyner, an edge rusher they were not short of.
Pick153
Rnd5
Ty Robinson
Ty Robinson in No. 153 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick193
Rnd6
Tyler Batty
This one needs a full-page explanation: Tyler Batty in the Round 6 slot, miles early. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
