Draft Grade — Chargers
Overall C+
ValueB NeedB TradesD+ FutureB-
The Chargers did enough to get by: C+.

It is a puzzling start. The Chargers had interior defensive lineman, cornerback and other spots to solve and reached instead for Javon Solomon, an OLB-EDGE, at pick No. 118. It nets out a thoroughly average C+.

The Milton III reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. However the rest shakes out, Barrett at that price is a win they earned.

Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.

Bottom line, the swing picks will decide whether this ages well.

Pick Analysis
Pick16 Rnd1 Rome Odunze
In the 16th overall pick they get a weapon on the perimeter. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick37 Rnd2 Adonai Mitchell
Adonai Mitchell in pick No. 37 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick47 Rnd2 Jonathon Brooks
By-the-book stuff, Jonathon Brooks at No. 47 squarely in line with his ranking. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick81 Rnd3 Brandon Dorlus
They paid sticker price for Brandon Dorlus in the 81st pick, and that is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick118 Rnd4 Javon Solomon
A want over a need in the Round 4 slot: Javon Solomon adds an OLB-EDGE while interior defensive lineman, cornerback and other spots keeps waiting.
Pick120 Rnd4 Theo Johnson
Theo Johnson at slot 120 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick140 Rnd5 Dylan Laube
A premium they did not need to pay, Dylan Laube a notch or two before his time. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick172 Rnd5 Marist Liufau
A tidy bit of business in Round 5, Pick 36, where Marist Liufau graded well above the range. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick181 Rnd6 Joe Milton III
They reached a country mile for Joe Milton III at the 181st overall pick, and the board is aghast. The roster fit checks out.
Pick225 Rnd7 Nathaniel Watson
A quiet steal in the 225th overall pick: Nathaniel Watson for less than the market said. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick253 Rnd7 Michael Barrett
Michael Barrett in pick 253 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
