Draft Grade — Commanders
Overall B

Good, not great, for the Commanders: B.

Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Commanders spent pick No. 223 on Dominic Zvada, a name most had 81 spots down the list. More right than wrong, and a B to match.

They covered a lot of ground and still skipped offensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. The Danielle Hunter pickup adds a known quantity to a class of unknowns. Cooper Jr. at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but offensive lineman.

Pick Analysis
Pick28 Rnd1 Sonny Styles
In the Round 1 slot they get a coverage-and-run second-level piece at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
Pick38 Rnd2 Joshua Josephs
Joshua Josephs at the 38th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick71 Rnd3 Omar Cooper Jr.
A tidy bit of business in slot 71, where Omar Cooper Jr. graded well above the range. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick145 Rnd5 Tacario Davis
By-the-book stuff, Tacario Davis at pick No. 145 squarely in line with his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick185 Rnd6 Dae'Quan Wright
A reasonable price with a little left over, Dae'Quan Wright in Round 6, Pick 6. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick196 Rnd6 VJ Payne
No drama and no debate, VJ Payne went about where he belonged in No. 196. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick223 Rnd7 Dominic Zvada
Dominic Zvada at Round 7, Pick 7 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
