Draft Grade — Vikings

The Vikings cashed the board's mistake on Benson: B-.

Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Vikings were there to profit. Malik Benson, the No. 136 name on the board, should have been long gone before the Round 5 slot. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B-.

If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback. Every board in the league had Singleton lower, and that gap is the story.

Offensive lineman was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. The weekend tilted hard toward the defense.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.

Pick Analysis
Pick18 Rnd1 Arvell Reese
Arvell Reese is a better player than the 18th pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick49 Rnd2 D'Angelo Ponds
No edge and no loss on D'Angelo Ponds in pick 49; it is a wash and a sensible one. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick82 Rnd3 Nicholas Singleton
A reach on Nicholas Singleton in the Round 3 slot; the board had better options right there. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick97 Rnd3 Darrell Jackson Jr.
Good price on Darrell Jackson Jr. in the 97th overall pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick161 Rnd5 Malik Benson
You do not let a wide receiver like Malik Benson reach Round 5, Pick 23 and blink. They did not. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick194 Rnd6 DJ Campbell
They let DJ Campbell come to them and pounced at pick No. 194. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick234 Rnd7 Miles Kitselman
Value with a capital V on Miles Kitselman in slot 234, a genuine coup. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick240 Rnd7 Brent Austin
Brent Austin in No. 240 lands just on the right side of the ledger. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
