Draft Grade — Cowboys

FutureB-
The Cowboys got the worse of every deal, and it shows in the D-. It is the swing that defines the weekend: Akheem Mesidor in No. 173, a good 169 spots before the room expected him. Hard to defend, and the D- reflects that.
Getting Skattebo where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. That cornerback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
It is not that Watts is a bad player; it is that the Cowboys had louder needs to answer first.
The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.
Pick Analysis
Pick12
Rnd1
Wyatt Milum
In slot 12 they get protection for the quarterback, a steep price for the projection. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick45
Rnd2
Nick Emmanwori
Nick Emmanwori at pick No. 45 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick49
Rnd2
Donovan Jackson
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Donovan Jackson well ahead of where he belonged. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick57
Rnd2
Tre Harris
Tre Harris slipping to pick 57 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick74
Rnd3
Alfred Collins
Circle this one: Alfred Collins at Round 3, Pick 10 is a fall that decides a draft. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick76
Rnd3
Xavier Watts
Of all the spots to shop, they chose safety. Xavier Watts in the 76th pick leaves cornerback and tight end for later.
Pick109
Rnd4
Tez Johnson
Taking Tez Johnson in the Round 4 slot is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick112
Rnd4
Savion Williams
Savion Williams at pick No. 112 is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick115
Rnd4
Quinshon Judkins
Quinshon Judkins at the 115th overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick117
Rnd4
Vernon Broughton
Vernon Broughton at Round 4, Pick 16 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick148
Rnd5
Kevin Winston Jr.
Steal is underselling it; Kevin Winston Jr. at No. 148 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick168
Rnd5
Danny Stutsman
Danny Stutsman in slot 168 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick170
Rnd5
Smael Mondon Jr.
A linebacker of that caliber at pick 170 is the definition of value, full stop. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick173
Rnd5
Akheem Mesidor
Akheem Mesidor at the 173rd pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick186
Rnd6
Cam Skattebo
You do not let a running back like Cam Skattebo reach pick 186 and blink. They did not. It fills a real need, too.
Pick209
Rnd6
CJ West
No edge and no loss on CJ West in the Round 6 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick232
Rnd7
Trey Wedig
They talked themselves into Trey Wedig at No. 232, and the board did not agree. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick248
Rnd7
KJ Jefferson
KJ Jefferson at the 248th overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
