Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B
ValueB NeedB TradesC- FutureA
The Patriots won the night they stopped Sanders from sliding. Grade: B.

Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Patriots were there to profit. T.J. Sanders, the No. 41 name on the board, should have been long gone before the 69th pick.

The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The cost of the Vinson reach is exactly the players who went right after him. They were the ones paying the moving tax this weekend.

Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.

Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.

Pick Analysis
Pick17 Rnd1 Tyler Warren
In No. 17 they get a seam-stretching tight end at fair value.
Pick38 Rnd2 Emeka Egbuka
They let Emeka Egbuka come to them and pounced at the Round 2 slot. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick49 Rnd2 Malaki Starks
Circle this one: Malaki Starks at pick No. 49 is a fall that decides a draft. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick69 Rnd3 T.J. Sanders
T.J. Sanders in slot 69 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick77 Rnd3 Donovan Jackson
Nice patience on Donovan Jackson, who had no business lasting to Round 3, Pick 13. It fills a real need, too.
Pick94 Rnd3 Deone Walker
The board had Deone Walker higher than the 94th overall pick, and the interior defensive lineman fell to them anyway. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick104 Rnd4 David Walker
David Walker at the 104th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick122 Rnd4 Kevin Winston Jr.
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Kevin Winston Jr. in pick 122, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick144 Rnd5 Dorian Strong
Dorian Strong in Round 5, Pick 6 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick216 Rnd6 Carson Vinson
Carson Vinson in No. 216 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick217 Rnd7 Jarquez Hunter
They robbed the room for Jarquez Hunter here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The roster fit checks out.
Pick220 Rnd7 Robert Longerbeam
They took Robert Longerbeam at par in the Round 7 slot, which is nothing to complain about. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick238 Rnd7 Cam Jackson
Good price on Cam Jackson in slot 238, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick255 Rnd7 Tonka Hemingway
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Tonka Hemingway. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
