Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall A
ValueA- NeedB TradesA+ FutureA+
The Patriots let Gabriel fall and pounced. Final grade: A.

Call it larceny. Dillon Gabriel sat on the board until pick No. 222, and the Patriots did not need to be asked twice. They executed a plan and it shows in the A.

Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it.

Adding Zack Moss by trade rounds out the weekend beyond the rookies.

It is a haul that will look even better come September.

Pick Analysis
Pick17 Rnd1 Josh Simmons
In Round 1, Pick 17 they get a long-term starter on the line. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick20 Rnd1 Tetairoa McMillan
Tetairoa McMillan at the 20th pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick30 Rnd1 Kenneth Grant
In pick 30 they get a disruptive interior force, and a steal at that. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick45 Rnd2 Colston Loveland
Steal is underselling it; Colston Loveland at No. 45 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The roster fit checks out.
Pick49 Rnd2 Cameron Williams
Cameron Williams slid further than he should have, and slot 49 is lovely value for the offensive lineman. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick69 Rnd3 Tre Harris
A wide receiver of that caliber at the Round 3 slot is the definition of value, full stop. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick81 Rnd3 Marcus Mbow
You do not let an offensive lineman like Marcus Mbow reach the 81st overall pick and blink. They did not. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick85 Rnd3 Andrew Mukuba
A quiet steal in pick No. 85: Andrew Mukuba for less than the market said. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick103 Rnd4 Quinshon Judkins
Quinshon Judkins in pick No. 103 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick105 Rnd4 Jalen Royals
Jalen Royals at the 105th overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick108 Rnd4 Maxwell Hairston
Somehow Maxwell Hairston was still sitting there in No. 108, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick145 Rnd5 Devin Neal
Taking Devin Neal in pick 145 is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick219 Rnd7 Dont'e Thornton Jr.
The board fumbled Dont'e Thornton Jr. all the way to the 219th pick, and they scooped it up. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick222 Rnd7 Dillon Gabriel
Dillon Gabriel in slot 222 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It fills a real need, too.
Pick234 Rnd7 Ollie Gordon II
Ollie Gordon II in the Round 7 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick241 Rnd7 John Williams
A tidy little value on John Williams in Round 7, Pick 23, a step better than break-even. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
