Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B

The steal of the weekend belongs to the Patriots and Fitzgerald: B.

Somebody in the 240th overall pick was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Patriots sat still while Ryan Fitzgerald, the No. 117 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.

They will regret leaving wide receiver for another day if the season turns on it. The cost of the Trapilo reach is exactly the players who went right after him.

The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes.

A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.

Pick Analysis
Pick4 Rnd1 Abdul Carter
In slot 4 they get a bendy edge with upside. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick38 Rnd2 Jalon Walker
They robbed the room for Jalon Walker here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick69 Rnd3 Malaki Starks
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Malaki Starks in pick 69, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick77 Rnd3 Ozzy Trapilo
A reach on Ozzy Trapilo in Round 3, Pick 13; the board had better options right there. It fills a real need, too.
Pick105 Rnd4 TreVeyon Henderson
Somehow TreVeyon Henderson was still sitting there in pick No. 105, and they pounced on premier running back value. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick145 Rnd5 Demetrius Knight Jr.
Taking Demetrius Knight Jr. in the Round 5 slot is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick219 Rnd7 Jonah Monheim
They barely believed it either: Jonah Monheim still on the board at the 219th overall pick. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick222 Rnd7 Seth McLaughlin
Seth McLaughlin in the 222nd pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick240 Rnd7 Ryan Fitzgerald
Steal is underselling it; Ryan Fitzgerald at slot 240 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
