FutureA+
The Lions did the meat-and-potatoes work well: B. Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Lions spent the 73rd overall pick on Zak Zinter, a name most had 31 spots down the list. The bottom line is a respectable B.
The Smith pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with safety, linebacker and other spots still on the board. The safety hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The Abrams-Draine pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but safety.
Pick Analysis
Pick73
Rnd3
Zak Zinter
They left a pile of value on the table to take Zak Zinter this early at the Round 3 slot. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick92
Rnd3
Kris Abrams-Draine
A quiet steal in the 92nd overall pick: Kris Abrams-Draine for less than the market said. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick97
Rnd3
Leonard Taylor III
No drama and no debate, Leonard Taylor III went about where he belonged in slot 97. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick108
Rnd4
Maason Smith
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Maason Smith at DT-EDGE with safety, linebacker and other spots open.
Pick160
Rnd5
Trevor Keegan
By-the-book stuff, Trevor Keegan at pick No. 160 squarely in line with his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick163
Rnd5
AJ Barner
AJ Barner at pick 163 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick170
Rnd5
Luke McCaffrey
Fair-plus on Luke McCaffrey, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick207
Rnd6
Jaylen Harrell
The board had cheaper options than Jaylen Harrell at the 207th overall pick, and it noticed. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick247
Rnd7
LaDarius Henderson
They took LaDarius Henderson at par in slot 247, which is nothing to complain about. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
