A solid, sensible weekend for the Cardinals: B-. The war room fell hard for Tahj Washington, and it showed at the Round 7 slot: 132 picks ahead of a board that had other ideas. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.
Getting Rakestraw Jr. where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. They will regret leaving tight end for another day if the season turns on it.
The Rakestraw Jr. pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with tight end still on the board.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the tight end spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick24
Rnd1
Jared Verse
In the 24th pick they get a quarterback's worst nightmare, and a steal at that. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick27
Rnd1
JC Latham
In slot 27 they get a building block for the line, outstanding value to boot. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick40
Rnd2
Quinyon Mitchell
They let Quinyon Mitchell come to them and pounced at pick No. 40. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick57
Rnd2
Cooper Beebe
Cooper Beebe in Round 2, Pick 25 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick66
Rnd3
Braden Fiske
They paid a round early for Braden Fiske in pick 66, more than the board wanted. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick67
Rnd3
Roman Wilson
Roman Wilson in the Round 3 slot is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick71
Rnd3
Ennis Rakestraw Jr.
A curious use of slot 71. Tight end needed the pick; a cornerback in Ennis Rakestraw Jr. did not.
Pick79
Rnd3
Darius Robinson
Darius Robinson at No. 79 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick88
Rnd3
Mike Sainristil
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went cornerback with Mike Sainristil while clear needs at tight end sat open.
Pick91
Rnd3
Jonathon Brooks
Jonathon Brooks at Round 3, Pick 28 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. The roster fit checks out.
Pick96
Rnd3
Cade Stover
A surprising call. With tight end still to address, they spent the 96th pick on Cade Stover, a TE-EDGE they were not short of.
Pick105
Rnd4
Sione Vaki
They reached a country mile for Sione Vaki at the Round 4 slot, and the board is aghast. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick114
Rnd4
MarShawn Lloyd
A reach for MarShawn Lloyd in pick 114; a little patience would have been rewarded. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick122
Rnd4
Malik Washington
Fair-plus on Malik Washington, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick126
Rnd4
Austin Booker
Austin Booker at No. 126 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick137
Rnd5
Leonard Taylor III
Leonard Taylor III in the Round 5 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick138
Rnd5
Jordan Travis
No drama and no debate, Jordan Travis went about where he belonged in pick No. 138. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick146
Rnd5
Jalyx Hunt
Jalyx Hunt at the 146th pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Where it fits the depth chart is the real question.
Pick152
Rnd5
Khristian Boyd
Khristian Boyd in pick 152 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick178
Rnd6
Frank Gore Jr.
They did well to land Frank Gore Jr. in the 178th overall pick, just ahead of his grade. It fills a real need, too.
Pick181
Rnd6
Eric Watts
They liked Eric Watts enough to skip the value, taking him in slot 181. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick188
Rnd6
Gabe Hall
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Gabe Hall well ahead of where he belonged. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick195
Rnd6
Chau Smith-Wade
Chau Smith-Wade at No. 195 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick203
Rnd6
Javon Baker
Javon Baker in the 203rd overall pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick211
Rnd6
Kingsley Eguakun
A premium they did not need to pay, Kingsley Eguakun a notch or two before his time. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick216
Rnd6
JD Bertrand
They read the board right and JD Bertrand was the payoff at pick 216. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick220
Rnd6
Josh Proctor
A safety of that caliber at slot 220 is the definition of value, full stop. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick222
Rnd7
Trevor Keegan
They talked themselves into Trevor Keegan at the 222nd pick, and the board did not agree. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick224
Rnd7
Zakhari Franklin
They paid up for Zakhari Franklin at the Round 7 slot when waiting would have done the job. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick230
Rnd7
Jeremy Flax
The board had cheaper options than Jeremy Flax at Round 7, Pick 10, and it noticed. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick234
Rnd7
Nathaniel Watson
They jumped the gun on Nathaniel Watson, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick237
Rnd7
Tahj Washington
A big swing on Tahj Washington at No. 237, well ahead of any board in the building. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick242
Rnd7
Walter Rouse
Value said wait; Walter Rouse in slot 242 says they were not listening. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick243
Rnd7
Phil Jurkovec
They paid sticker price for Phil Jurkovec in the Round 7 slot, and that is fine. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
