Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall B-
ValueB NeedB TradesB- FutureB-
A respectable, level-headed haul for the 49ers: B-.

Hard to follow the map here. The 49ers bypassed interior defensive lineman, quarterback and other spots to take Maason Smith at the Round 3 slot, a spot they had covered.

For all the activity, interior defensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain. Landing Jackson that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. They left with offensive lineman solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.

The offense got the lion's share of the attention.

Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Pick Analysis
Pick31 Rnd1 Jordan Morgan
In No. 31 they get a long-term starter on the line. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick63 Rnd2 Edgerrin Cooper
Edgerrin Cooper in slot 63 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It fills a real need, too.
Pick94 Rnd3 Maason Smith
A want over a need in pick 94: Maason Smith adds a DT-EDGE while interior defensive lineman, quarterback and other spots keeps waiting.
Pick98 Rnd3 Zak Zinter
Nothing to complain about; Zak Zinter went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick125 Rnd4 Jarrian Jones
No edge and no loss on Jarrian Jones in the 125th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick132 Rnd4 Javon Foster
A reasonable price with a little left over, Javon Foster in the 132nd pick. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick176 Rnd6 Frank Gore Jr.
They paid sticker price for Frank Gore Jr. in Round 6, Pick 1, and that is fine. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick209 Rnd6 Josh Proctor
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Josh Proctor at pick No. 209 is the proof. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick214 Rnd6 AJ Barner
AJ Barner slid further than he should have, and the Round 6 slot is lovely value for the tight end. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick249 Rnd7 Sheridan Jones
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Sheridan Jones in slot 249. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick251 Rnd7 Jha'Quan Jackson
Jha'Quan Jackson slipping to pick 251 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
