Draft Grade — Cowboys

FutureA+
A costly weekend of dealing drags the Cowboys to a D. Some picks age like wine; Carson Beck at pick No. 44 will need to, sitting 34 spots clear of his grade.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. They banked enough surplus on Golday to cover a lot of smaller sins. The veteran additions, T.J. Watt chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not.
On the needs board they went 8 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.
Pick Analysis
Pick12
Rnd1
Mansoor Delane
In pick No. 12 they get a press-man option on the boundary at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick16
Rnd1
T.J. Parker
In the Round 1 slot they get juice off the edge, reach and all. More want than need.
Pick20
Rnd1
Sonny Styles
In Round 1, Pick 20 they get a three-down second-level presence, even if it was a touch early. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick21
Rnd1
Kayden McDonald
In No. 21 they get an anchor for the defensive front. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick33
Rnd2
Anthony Hill Jr.
A premium they did not need to pay, Anthony Hill Jr. a notch or two before his time. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick44
Rnd2
Carson Beck
Carson Beck at the 44th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It fills a real need, too.
Pick53
Rnd2
Gennings Dunker
Gennings Dunker at the 53rd overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick75
Rnd3
A.J. Haulcy
The board fumbled A.J. Haulcy all the way to pick 75, and they scooped it up. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick76
Rnd3
Zakee Wheatley
A reasonable price with a little left over, Zakee Wheatley in the Round 3 slot. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick85
Rnd3
Malachi Fields
The board had Malachi Fields higher than No. 85, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick90
Rnd3
Nicholas Singleton
Nicholas Singleton at the 90th pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the running back. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick92
Rnd3
Caden Curry
Caden Curry at Round 3, Pick 28 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick103
Rnd4
Jake Golday
Taking Jake Golday in slot 103 is close to grand larceny; an edge rusher that good had no business lasting this long. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick112
Rnd4
Tacario Davis
Tacario Davis at pick No. 112 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick150
Rnd5
Aaron Graves
Aaron Graves in the 150th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The roster fit checks out.
Pick177
Rnd5
Charles Jagusah
By-the-book stuff, Charles Jagusah at pick No. 177 squarely in line with his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick215
Rnd6
J. Michael Sturdivant
J. Michael Sturdivant in the Round 6 slot is fair value, right on his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick221
Rnd7
Hykeem Williams
They took Hykeem Williams at par in No. 221, which is nothing to complain about. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick225
Rnd7
Will Kacmarek
A conviction pick on Will Kacmarek at the 225th overall pick that the board grades a round light. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
