nepats426 DRAFTING FOR THEPatriots
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall
B-
ValueC
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
The Patriots checked most of the boxes and earned a B-. Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Patriots spent the 247th pick on Roman Hemby, a name the board had a full 32 spots lower.
A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want. Kilgore falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
The offense got the lion's share of the attention.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Gennings Dunker
In the 31st overall pick they get a building block for the line, a steep price for the projection. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick63
Rnd2
Max Iheanachor
Max Iheanachor at the Round 2 slot jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick95
Rnd3
Jacob Rodriguez
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jacob Rodriguez. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick125
Rnd4
Eli Raridon
No drama and no debate, Eli Raridon went about where he belonged in No. 125. It fills a real need, too.
Pick131
Rnd4
Jalon Kilgore
The board had Jalon Kilgore higher than the 131st pick, and the safety fell to them anyway. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick169
Rnd5
Eric McAlister
They liked Eric McAlister enough to skip the value, taking him in pick No. 169. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick189
Rnd6
Bud Clark
No edge and no loss on Bud Clark in pick No. 189; it is a wash and a sensible one. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick200
Rnd6
Trebor Pena
Trebor Pena in the 200th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick207
Rnd6
Cole Payton
A tidy little value on Cole Payton in pick 207, a step better than break-even. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick210
Rnd6
Nolan Rucci
Nolan Rucci in Round 6, Pick 31 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The roster fit checks out.
Pick247
Rnd7
Roman Hemby
Roman Hemby at the Round 7 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
