Jz DRAFTING FOR THEPatriots
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall
B-
ValueC+
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
More right than wrong for the Patriots, and a B- to prove it. The Patriots treated their own grade as gospel and everyone else's as noise, spending No. 200 on Keyron Crawford a full 37 spots early. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.
It is not that Louis is a bad player; it is that the Patriots had louder needs to answer first. For all the activity, interior defensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain. However the rest shakes out, Sadiq at that price is a win they earned.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Kenyon Sadiq
In No. 31 they get a moveable chess piece at tight end, outstanding value to boot.
Pick63
Rnd2
Max Iheanachor
They jumped the gun on Max Iheanachor, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick95
Rnd3
Jacob Rodriguez
A straight-up fair deal on Jacob Rodriguez at Round 3, Pick 31, value and slot in agreement. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick125
Rnd4
Ted Hurst
Ted Hurst at slot 125 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick131
Rnd4
Kyle Louis
They bypassed pressing needs at interior defensive lineman and running back to take Kyle Louis, a linebacker that was not the priority.
Pick169
Rnd5
Bud Clark
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Bud Clark. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick189
Rnd6
Thaddeus Dixon
Thaddeus Dixon at Round 6, Pick 10 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick200
Rnd6
Keyron Crawford
Keyron Crawford in pick No. 200 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick207
Rnd6
Fernando Carmona
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Fernando Carmona well ahead of where he belonged. The roster fit checks out.
Pick210
Rnd6
Barion Brown
No edge and no loss on Barion Brown in the 210th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick247
Rnd7
Haynes King
No drama and no debate, Haynes King went about where he belonged in No. 247. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
