The phones sank the Cowboys this weekend: D-. The Roman Hemby pick is the one that will follow the Cowboys into the fall. They took him 55 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. It is not that Lucas is a bad player; it is that the Cowboys had louder needs to answer first.
The tight end spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The Haulcy pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, tight end very much included.
Pick Analysis
Pick20
Rnd1
Anthony Hill Jr.
In Round 1, Pick 20 they get a green-dot type in the middle, though they paid up to get him. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick28
Rnd1
Sonny Styles
In the 28th pick they get a downhill thumper at linebacker, even if it was a touch early. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick38
Rnd2
Caleb Banks
A tidy bit of business in pick No. 38, where Caleb Banks graded well above the range. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick40
Rnd2
Caleb Tiernan
They reached a country mile for Caleb Tiernan at slot 40, and the board is aghast. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick60
Rnd2
Anthony Lucas
Of all the spots to shop, they chose edge rusher. Anthony Lucas in the 60th overall pick leaves tight end for later.
Pick69
Rnd3
A.J. Haulcy
A.J. Haulcy in No. 69 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick75
Rnd3
Zakee Wheatley
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Zakee Wheatley at safety with tight end open.
Pick111
Rnd4
Caden Curry
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went edge rusher with Caden Curry while clear needs at tight end sat open.
Pick112
Rnd4
Tacario Davis
By-the-book stuff, Tacario Davis at pick 112 squarely in line with his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick150
Rnd5
Chase Roberts
They took Chase Roberts at par in No. 150, which is nothing to complain about. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick177
Rnd5
Charles Jagusah
They paid sticker price for Charles Jagusah in pick No. 177, and that is fine. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick215
Rnd6
Roman Hemby
Roman Hemby at Round 6, Pick 36 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick221
Rnd7
Jordan Hall
A real head-scratcher, Jordan Hall in slot 221 is miles ahead of his ranking. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick225
Rnd7
Joey Aguilar
A tidy little value on Joey Aguilar in the 225th overall pick, a step better than break-even. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
