MOCKHOF DRAFTING FOR THEBengals
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Bengals
Overall
B-
ValueB-
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
The Bengals kept it disciplined and banked a B-. The Bengals put a flag in the ground for Javon Baker, 65 picks before anyone else would have, and the value took the hit. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B-.
They will regret leaving cornerback for another day if the season turns on it. The McCaffrey steal is the beam this whole class leans on. Tight end was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick Analysis
Pick18
Rnd1
Olumuyiwa Fashanu
A slide stopped in the 18th overall pick, with Olumuyiwa Fashanu worth more than the price. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick49
Rnd2
Kris Jenkins
A clean, defensible pick in pick No. 49 with a little surplus value in Kris Jenkins. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick80
Rnd3
Junior Colson
Nothing to complain about; Junior Colson went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick115
Rnd4
Javon Baker
Value said wait; Javon Baker in No. 115 says they were not listening. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick151
Rnd5
Luke McCaffrey
They let Luke McCaffrey come to them and pounced at Round 5, Pick 15. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick173
Rnd5
Jordan Jefferson
They went early on Jordan Jefferson in slot 173, and the value did not follow. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick196
Rnd6
Jared Wiley
A premium they did not need to pay, Jared Wiley a notch or two before his time. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick238
Rnd7
Tanner McLachlan
Tanner McLachlan at pick No. 238 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick254
Rnd7
Carson Steele
No edge and no loss on Carson Steele in No. 254; it is a wash and a sensible one. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
