Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall C+
ValueD+ NeedB+ TradesB- FutureB-
The Patriots bet the future on Leavitt. The board says C+.

The tape said wait; the Patriots did not. Francis Brewu went at pick 162, a good 74 picks before the board was ready. The good and the questionable cancel out to a C+.

If one pick saves this weekend, it is Bolden. They have staked the next five years on Sam Leavitt, which is the only story that really matters here. The tight end hole is the one line item this class does not answer.

So much rides on Sam Leavitt that the real verdict is a season or two away.

Pick Analysis
Pick23 Rnd1 Sam Leavitt
In No. 23 they get a long-term answer under center, a steep price for the projection.
Pick54 Rnd2 Jelani McDonald
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Jelani McDonald at the 54th overall pick is the proof. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick85 Rnd3 KJ Bolden
A top-tier safety at a bargain, KJ Bolden in Round 3, Pick 21, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick121 Rnd4 Melkart Abou Jaoude
Melkart Abou Jaoude in the Round 4 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick162 Rnd5 Francis Brewu
Francis Brewu at slot 162 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick184 Rnd6 Eugene Wilson III
Value said wait; Eugene Wilson III in pick 184 says they were not listening. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick209 Rnd6 Justice Haynes
Justice Haynes at pick No. 209 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It fills a real need, too.
Pick251 Rnd7 Payton Pierce
Payton Pierce at the 251st overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick257 Rnd7 Braylan Shelby
Braylan Shelby at No. 257 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
