The Raiders drew a line under the quarterback search with Mendoza: B+. There is conviction, and then there is this. The Raiders took Dominic Zvada a full 71 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend.
So much rides on Fernando Mendoza that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast.
They banked enough surplus on Abney II to cover a lot of smaller sins. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick Analysis
Pick2
Rnd1
Fernando Mendoza
In slot 2 they get the face of the franchise at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick16
Rnd1
Gennings Dunker
In pick No. 16 they get protection for the quarterback, even if it was a touch early. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick36
Rnd2
Christen Miller
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Christen Miller at Round 2, Pick 4. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick67
Rnd3
Connor Lew
Connor Lew at No. 67 is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick102
Rnd4
Keith Abney II
A cornerback of that caliber at pick 102 is the definition of value, full stop. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick117
Rnd4
Carson Beck
Good price on Carson Beck in the Round 4 slot, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The roster fit checks out.
Pick174
Rnd5
Jacob Rodriguez
Nothing to complain about; Jacob Rodriguez went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick182
Rnd6
Isaac Smith
A quiet steal in No. 182: Isaac Smith for less than the market said. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick185
Rnd6
Aamil Wagner
Aamil Wagner at pick 185 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick219
Rnd7
Thaddeus Dixon
Thaddeus Dixon at Round 7, Pick 3 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick221
Rnd7
Dominic Zvada
A wild overpay on Dominic Zvada in the Round 7 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
