Jaybeast17 DRAFTING FOR THEPatriots
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall
B-
ValueB-
NeedB+
TradesB-
FutureB-
More right than wrong for the Patriots, and a B- to prove it. You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Patriots did exactly that with Braylan Shelby in Round 6, Pick 21. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.
The Bolden value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. That running back hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
Good work on the whole, with running back the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick30
Rnd1
KJ Bolden
In the 30th pick they get a downhill hitter at safety at a price that makes it sweeter. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick62
Rnd2
Ryan Wingo
A slide stopped in Round 2, Pick 30, with Ryan Wingo worth more than the price. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick94
Rnd3
Quincy Rhodes Jr.
Nothing to complain about; Quincy Rhodes Jr. went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick125
Rnd4
AJ Green
A big swing on AJ Green at pick 125, well ahead of any board in the building. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick130
Rnd4
Kameryn Crawford
Kameryn Crawford in the Round 4 slot is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick168
Rnd5
Gunner Stockton
Gunner Stockton in slot 168 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick189
Rnd6
Jaden Platt
Jaden Platt in the 189th pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick200
Rnd6
Braylan Shelby
They reached a country mile for Braylan Shelby at the 200th overall pick, and the board is aghast. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick207
Rnd6
Tavion Gadson
They reached into another round for Tavion Gadson, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick209
Rnd6
Desmond Umeozulu
They talked themselves into Desmond Umeozulu at pick No. 209, and the board did not agree. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick246
Rnd7
Monroe Mills
Monroe Mills at Round 7, Pick 30 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It fills a real need, too.
