Draft Grade — Panthers
Overall
C+
ValueD+
NeedA-
TradesB-
FutureB-
The Panthers let Sabb fall into their laps, and walked away with a C+. Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Panthers were there to profit. Keon Sabb, the No. 64 name on the board, should have been long gone before pick 132.
The Baker reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
On the needs board they went 5 of 9, with wide receiver the one that mattered most. Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.
It nets out as a middle-of-the-pack haul that neither helps nor hurts much.
Pick Analysis
Pick19
Rnd1
Ryan Wingo
In pick 19 they get a weapon on the perimeter, a steep price for the projection. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick53
Rnd2
Brandon Baker
Brandon Baker at pick No. 53 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It fills a real need, too.
Pick84
Rnd3
Sammy Brown
You do not let a linebacker like Sammy Brown reach No. 84 and blink. They did not. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick121
Rnd4
Shadre Hurst
They let Shadre Hurst come to them and pounced at slot 121. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick132
Rnd4
Keon Sabb
They barely believed it either: Keon Sabb still on the board at the 132nd pick. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick178
Rnd5
Dezz Ricks
A straight-up fair deal on Dezz Ricks at the 178th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
