A respectable, level-headed haul for the Colts: B-.

Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Payton Pierce got past him. The Colts do not have to explain a thing at pick 219. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B-.

They are betting Johnson proves the room right and everyone else wrong. The interior defensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.

Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it. Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.

Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.

Pick Analysis
Pick42 Rnd2 Nick Marsh
Nick Marsh at the 42nd pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick82 Rnd3 Terrance Carter Jr.
Terrance Carter Jr. at slot 82 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick108 Rnd4 DJ Lagway
By-the-book stuff, DJ Lagway at No. 108 squarely in line with his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick153 Rnd5 Isaac Brown
Isaac Brown in Round 5, Pick 16 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick172 Rnd5 Elijah Paige
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Elijah Paige at slot 172. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick196 Rnd6 Avery Johnson
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Avery Johnson. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick219 Rnd6 Payton Pierce
Taking Payton Pierce in the 219th overall pick is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. The roster fit checks out.
Pick233 Rnd7 TJ Metcalf
TJ Metcalf slid further than he should have, and the Round 7 slot is lovely value for the safety. A minor itch, scratched.
