Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall C+
ValueF NeedA- TradesB- FutureB-
The Cowboys land in the muddy middle: C+.

You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Cowboys did exactly that with Cam Calhoun in the Round 5 slot.

However the rest shakes out, Spears at that price is a win they earned. That running back hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.

Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. They trusted the board more than the depth chart.

So much rides on Nick Marsh that the real verdict is a season or two away.

Pick Analysis
Pick12 Rnd1 Nick Marsh
In the 12th overall pick they get a weapon on the perimeter, though the board says they badly overpaid. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick20 Rnd1 Chris Peal
In Round 1, Pick 20 they get a potential shutdown corner, a steep price for the projection. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick112 Rnd4 Sammy Brown
Sammy Brown at the Round 4 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick150 Rnd5 Dashawn Spears
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Dashawn Spears in pick 150, plain and simple. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick177 Rnd5 Cam Calhoun
Cam Calhoun in pick No. 177 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick215 Rnd6 Demond Williams Jr.
A quarterback of that caliber at the 215th pick is the definition of value, full stop. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick221 Rnd7 DJ McKinney
DJ McKinney in the 221st pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick225 Rnd7 Blake Frazier
Blake Frazier at Round 7, Pick 9 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
