FutureB-
Mestemaker is the plan now, and the Dolphins grade out a B. With the present handled at quarterback, the Dolphins looked to the future and took Drew Mestemaker anyway. You can quibble with the timing, not the position. More right than wrong, and a B to match.
That is a running back worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. The cost of the Thompson reach is exactly the players who went right after him.
The dealing alone would carry a lesser class.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick15
Rnd1
Drew Mestemaker
In pick No. 15 they get a passer to set the clock by. More want than need.
Pick19
Rnd1
Cam Coleman
In slot 19 they get a weapon on the perimeter, outstanding value to boot. A real need, handled.
Pick46
Rnd2
Will Echoles
Will Echoles in Round 2, Pick 14 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick73
Rnd3
Jadan Baugh
Steal is underselling it; Jadan Baugh at pick 73 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. This was not a hole anyone had circled.
Pick104
Rnd4
Dylan Raiola
Dylan Raiola at No. 104 is a conviction pick that outran the value. The roster logic is harder to follow.
Pick110
Rnd4
Taylor Wein
Value said wait; Taylor Wein in the 110th overall pick says they were not listening. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick130
Rnd4
Jayden Jackson
No drama and no debate, Jayden Jackson went about where he belonged in the 130th pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick138
Rnd5
Brody Foley
A reach on Brody Foley in the Round 5 slot; the board had better options right there. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick148
Rnd5
Justin Evans
Nice patience on Justin Evans, who had no business lasting to pick 148. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick159
Rnd5
Jalen Thompson
Jalen Thompson at slot 159 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick165
Rnd5
Nicholas Rodriguez
A quiet steal in the 165th overall pick: Nicholas Rodriguez for less than the market said. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick186
Rnd6
Gunner Stockton
Gunner Stockton at the 186th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A fine player at a spot low on the priority list.
Pick191
Rnd6
Justice Haynes
Justice Haynes at the Round 6 slot is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the running back. Not a spot anyone had flagged, which makes it a head-scratcher.
Pick245
Rnd7
Joenel Aguero
Joenel Aguero in No. 245 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A pick in search of a role on this roster.
Pick254
Rnd7
Kamari Wilson
Kamari Wilson at pick No. 254 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It fits a board better than it fits this team.
