Draft Grade — Browns
Overall C+
ValueC+ NeedB TradesC FutureB-
Some hits, some head-scratchers, and a C+ for the Browns.

The Pat Coogan pick is the one that will follow the Browns into the fall. They took him 28 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so. Fine in stretches, shaky in others: a C+.

For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took McAlister. The trades cost them a sliver of value they did not need to spend.

Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.

Call it incomplete, and check back in a couple of seasons.

Pick Analysis
Pick13 Rnd1 Makai Lemon
In pick 13 they get a difference-maker at receiver at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick24 Rnd1 Olaivavega Ioane
In pick No. 24 they get a building block for the line. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick29 Rnd1 Monroe Freeling
In slot 29 they get a blindside protector, though the board says they badly overpaid. A real need, handled.
Pick70 Rnd3 Omar Cooper Jr.
A premium they did not need to pay, Omar Cooper Jr. a notch or two before his time. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick93 Rnd3 Jacob Rodriguez
No edge and no loss on Jacob Rodriguez in No. 93; it is a wash and a sensible one. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick107 Rnd4 Jalon Kilgore
Jalon Kilgore at the Round 4 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick139 Rnd5 Louis Moore
Louis Moore in pick 139 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick144 Rnd5 Tanner Koziol
They paid up for Tanner Koziol at Round 5, Pick 6 when waiting would have done the job. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick147 Rnd5 Beau Stephens
Beau Stephens at No. 147 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick167 Rnd5 Pat Coogan
Pat Coogan in the 167th pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick204 Rnd6 Eric McAlister
A slide stopped in the 204th overall pick, with Eric McAlister worth more than the price. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick248 Rnd7 Trey Zuhn III
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Trey Zuhn III. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
