The Steelers drew a line under the quarterback search with Beck: C. The tape said wait; the Steelers did not. Christian Gray went at the 86th pick, a good 263 picks before the board was ready.
The Sorsby pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. Carson Beck gives the offense a face and a plan, and the grade leans heavily on whether he hits. With interior defensive lineman, edge rusher and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on offensive lineman is the choice that costs them.
Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Call it incomplete, and check back in a couple of seasons.
Pick Analysis
Pick20
Rnd1
Carson Beck
In the Round 1 slot they get a passer to set the clock by, a steep price for the projection. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick51
Rnd2
Makhi Hughes
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Makhi Hughes well ahead of where he belonged. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick84
Rnd3
Max Iheanachor
A real head-scratcher, Max Iheanachor in the 84th pick is miles ahead of his ranking. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick86
Rnd3
Christian Gray
Christian Gray in Round 3, Pick 22 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick99
Rnd3
Caleb Lomu
They bypassed pressing needs at interior defensive lineman, edge rusher and other spots to take Caleb Lomu, an offensive lineman that was not the priority.
Pick119
Rnd4
Bryce Lance
A straight-up fair deal on Bryce Lance at pick 119, value and slot in agreement. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick133
Rnd4
Jayden Maiava
The board fumbled Jayden Maiava all the way to the 133rd overall pick, and they scooped it up. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick160
Rnd5
Jaydn Ott
Value said wait; Jaydn Ott in the 160th pick says they were not listening. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick184
Rnd6
Eli Stowers
Somehow Eli Stowers was still sitting there in Round 6, Pick 6, and they pounced on premier tight end value. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick197
Rnd6
Robert Spears-Jennings
They reached into another round for Robert Spears-Jennings, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick212
Rnd6
Pat Coogan
Pat Coogan in pick 212 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick213
Rnd6
Brendan Sorsby
Brendan Sorsby in the Round 6 slot is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick234
Rnd7
Jalen Hale
A big swing on Jalen Hale at slot 234, well ahead of any board in the building. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
