Endries should have been long gone. The Steelers pounced, and earned a B.

Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Steelers were there to profit. Jack Endries, the No. 102 name on the board, should have been long gone before pick No. 136.

They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up. Ponds has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. They left with safety solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.

Pick Analysis
Pick21 Rnd1 Caleb Downs
In the 21st overall pick they get a downhill hitter at safety at a price that makes it sweeter. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick53 Rnd2 Elijah Sarratt
The board had Elijah Sarratt higher than slot 53, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. It fills a real need, too.
Pick76 Rnd3 Michael Taaffe
Michael Taaffe at pick 76 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick85 Rnd3 Carter Smith
They paid sticker price for Carter Smith in the Round 3 slot, and that is fine. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick99 Rnd3 D'Angelo Ponds
D'Angelo Ponds in pick No. 99 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick121 Rnd4 Bryce Lance
Bryce Lance in the 121st pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick136 Rnd4 Jack Endries
Circle this one: Jack Endries at No. 136 is a fall that decides a draft. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick160 Rnd5 DJ Campbell
No edge and no loss on DJ Campbell in Round 5, Pick 21; it is a wash and a sensible one. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick213 Rnd6 DJ Harvey
DJ Harvey at pick 213 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. The roster fit checks out.
Pick214 Rnd6 Barion Brown
Barion Brown at Round 6, Pick 34 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick224 Rnd7 Jordan White
Jordan White at No. 224 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick237 Rnd7 Dijon Johnson
A reasonable price with a little left over, Dijon Johnson in the Round 7 slot. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
