ValueB-

The Steelers got the worse of every deal, and it shows in the C+. You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Steelers did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. Fine in stretches, shaky in others: a C+.
They will need Gentry to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up.
They will answer for taking offensive lineman early while edge rusher, running back and other spots went begging. On value alone, McNeil-Warren makes the weekend a net positive.
It nets out as a middle-of-the-pack haul that neither helps nor hurts much.
Pick Analysis
Pick24
Rnd1
Denzel Boston
In Round 1, Pick 24 they get a matchup problem out wide at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick55
Rnd2
Emmanuel Pregnon
Emmanuel Pregnon slipping to pick No. 55 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick70
Rnd3
Carter Smith
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Carter Smith at offensive lineman with edge rusher, running back and other spots open.
Pick76
Rnd3
Ja'Kobi Lane
A tidy bit of business in the 76th overall pick, where Ja'Kobi Lane graded well above the range. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick85
Rnd3
Emmanuel McNeil-Warren
Emmanuel McNeil-Warren in the Round 3 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick99
Rnd3
D'Angelo Ponds
They paid sticker price for D'Angelo Ponds in pick 99, and that is fine. The roster fit checks out.
Pick121
Rnd4
Bishop Fitzgerald
Bishop Fitzgerald at No. 121 is money in the bank, a safety taken below his worth. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick122
Rnd4
Tacario Davis
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Tacario Davis in slot 122. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick138
Rnd4
Domani Jackson
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Domani Jackson. It fills a real need, too.
Pick144
Rnd5
Aaron Graves
Aaron Graves at No. 144 is a conviction pick that outran the value. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick159
Rnd5
Davison Igbinosun
A quiet steal in slot 159: Davison Igbinosun for less than the market said. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick162
Rnd5
Gracen Halton
They went early on Gracen Halton in pick No. 162, and the value did not follow. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick171
Rnd5
Eric McAlister
No edge and no loss on Eric McAlister in the Round 5 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick179
Rnd5
Bud Clark
A straight-up fair deal on Bud Clark at Round 5, Pick 41, value and slot in agreement. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick213
Rnd6
J. Michael Sturdivant
J. Michael Sturdivant at the 213th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick223
Rnd7
Joey Aguilar
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Joey Aguilar at the 223rd pick is the proof. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick224
Rnd7
PJ Williams
PJ Williams in No. 224 is fair value, right on his grade. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick237
Rnd7
Eric Gentry
This one needs a full-page explanation: Eric Gentry in pick 237, miles early. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
