Good, not great, for the Steelers: B-. There is reaching, and then there is Jordan Hall at Round 7, Pick 20. The Steelers jumped the board by 80 and dared it to prove them wrong.
That Beck pick is the receipt they will wave around later. They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it.
Job largely done: quarterback settled and 7 of 9 of the wish list covered. Quantity was the play, for better or worse.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick20
Rnd1
Jermod McCoy
Jermod McCoy slid further than he should have, and No. 20 is lovely value for the cornerback. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick51
Rnd2
Elijah Sarratt
No drama and no debate, Elijah Sarratt went about where he belonged in pick 51. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick76
Rnd3
Michael Taaffe
Nice patience on Michael Taaffe, who had no business lasting to the Round 3 slot. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick88
Rnd3
A.J. Haulcy
The board had A.J. Haulcy higher than pick No. 88, and the safety fell to them anyway. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick99
Rnd3
D'Angelo Ponds
D'Angelo Ponds at slot 99 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. The roster fit checks out.
Pick127
Rnd4
Bryce Lance
Fair-plus on Bryce Lance, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick138
Rnd4
Bray Hubbard
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Bray Hubbard. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick139
Rnd4
Logan Jones
Logan Jones in the 139th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick145
Rnd5
DJ Campbell
DJ Campbell in No. 145 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick151
Rnd5
Jacob Rodriguez
They paid up for Jacob Rodriguez at the Round 5 slot when waiting would have done the job. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick166
Rnd5
Bryce Boettcher
They went early on Bryce Boettcher in pick 166, and the value did not follow. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick178
Rnd5
Rayshaun Benny
This one needs a full-page explanation: Rayshaun Benny in pick No. 178, miles early. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick197
Rnd6
Bud Clark
Bud Clark at Round 6, Pick 19 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick208
Rnd6
Carson Beck
They robbed the room for Carson Beck here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick212
Rnd6
Makhi Hughes
Makhi Hughes in Round 6, Pick 34 is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick213
Rnd6
Trey Zuhn III
A big swing on Trey Zuhn III at No. 213, well ahead of any board in the building. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick234
Rnd7
Jordan Hall
Value said wait; Jordan Hall in the 234th pick says they were not listening. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick238
Rnd7
Jerry Wilson
They paid sticker price for Jerry Wilson in the Round 7 slot, and that is fine. It fills a real need, too.
Pick253
Rnd7
Barion Brown
Barion Brown slipping to the 253rd overall pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
