Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall A-
ValueB NeedB TradesA+ FutureA-
The Steelers won the night they stopped Slaughter from sliding. Grade: A-.

The Steelers spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Jake Slaughter, the No. 38 name on the board, in the 99th pick.

The cost of the Campbell reach is exactly the players who went right after him. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. With running back and tight end unsolved, spending premium capital on offensive lineman is the choice that costs them.

They covered a lot of ground and still skipped running back, which is a strange place to end up.

Trust the process, because this time the process plainly worked.

Pick Analysis
Pick25 Rnd1 Jermod McCoy
In pick 25 they get a press-man option on the boundary, outstanding value to boot. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick54 Rnd2 Fernando Mendoza
Fernando Mendoza in the 54th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick79 Rnd3 Michael Taaffe
Value with a capital V on Michael Taaffe in pick No. 79, a genuine coup. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick83 Rnd3 A.J. Haulcy
A.J. Haulcy in No. 83 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick99 Rnd3 Jake Slaughter
Circle this one: Jake Slaughter at the 99th pick is a fall that decides a draft. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick120 Rnd4 Anthony Lucas
Taking Anthony Lucas in Round 4, Pick 20 is close to grand larceny; an edge rusher that good had no business lasting this long. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick126 Rnd4 Logan Jones
A surprising call. With running back and tight end still to address, they spent slot 126 on Logan Jones, an offensive lineman they were not short of.
Pick133 Rnd4 Bray Hubbard
No drama and no debate, Bray Hubbard went about where he belonged in the Round 4 slot. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick138 Rnd4 Jacob Rodriguez
A real head-scratcher, Jacob Rodriguez in the 138th overall pick is miles ahead of his ranking. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick140 Rnd4 DJ Campbell
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went offensive lineman with DJ Campbell while clear needs at running back and tight end sat open.
Pick146 Rnd5 Kage Casey
They took Kage Casey at par in the 146th pick, which is nothing to complain about. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick147 Rnd5 Aaron Graves
They reached a country mile for Aaron Graves at No. 147, and the board is aghast. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick174 Rnd5 Duce Robinson
Nothing to complain about; Duce Robinson went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick175 Rnd5 Davison Igbinosun
The board had Davison Igbinosun higher than Round 5, Pick 35, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick181 Rnd5 Bud Clark
A reach on Bud Clark in the Round 5 slot; the board had better options right there. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick214 Rnd6 Dane Key
They barely believed it either: Dane Key still on the board at slot 214. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
