The Dolphins checked most of the boxes and earned a B-. The Dolphins went off the board in a big way for Nadame Tucker, 50 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.
That offensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Payton. A small leak at the table, if not a fatal one.
Good work on the whole, with offensive lineman the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick11
Rnd1
Mansoor Delane
Mansoor Delane at the 11th pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick43
Rnd2
Elijah Sarratt
Elijah Sarratt at Round 2, Pick 11 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick87
Rnd3
Omar Cooper Jr.
Omar Cooper Jr. is a better player than slot 87 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick111
Rnd4
Justin Joly
Nothing to complain about; Justin Joly went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick112
Rnd4
Michael Trigg
They paid sticker price for Michael Trigg in No. 112, and that is fine. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick120
Rnd4
Nadame Tucker
Nadame Tucker at pick No. 120 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick149
Rnd5
J'Mari Taylor
J'Mari Taylor in the 149th pick is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick158
Rnd5
Sawyer Robertson
Sawyer Robertson at the Round 5 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick221
Rnd7
Nick Barrett
Nick Barrett in Round 7, Pick 5 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick251
Rnd7
Cole Payton
Value with a capital V on Cole Payton in the 251st overall pick, a genuine coup. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick255
Rnd7
Ahmaad Moses
A real head-scratcher, Ahmaad Moses in pick No. 255 is miles ahead of his ranking. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick257
Rnd7
Deven Eastern
Deven Eastern at pick 257 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
