Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B-
ValueC+ NeedB+ TradesB- FutureB-
The Patriots kept it disciplined and banked a B-.

The Patriots did not so much draft Patrick Payton as overpay for him, 42 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.

Getting Anderson where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.

Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it. Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.

Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.

Pick Analysis
Pick31 Rnd1 Omar Cooper Jr.
In pick 31 they get a matchup problem out wide. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick63 Rnd2 Genesis Smith
A wild overpay on Genesis Smith in slot 63, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick95 Rnd3 Brian Parker II
Brian Parker II at the Round 3 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick125 Rnd4 Mikail Kamara
Mikail Kamara at pick No. 125 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick131 Rnd4 Joe Royer
Joe Royer in Round 4, Pick 31 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick171 Rnd5 Seth McGowan
Seth McGowan in No. 171 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The roster fit checks out.
Pick191 Rnd6 Aaron Anderson
Aaron Anderson slid further than he should have, and slot 191 is lovely value for the wide receiver. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick198 Rnd6 Pat Coogan
Pat Coogan at Round 6, Pick 17 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick202 Rnd6 Patrick Payton
Value said wait; Patrick Payton in the Round 6 slot says they were not listening. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick212 Rnd6 Jeremiah Wright
No edge and no loss on Jeremiah Wright in the 212th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It fills a real need, too.
Pick247 Rnd7 Jack Kelly
By-the-book stuff, Jack Kelly at pick No. 247 squarely in line with his ranking. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
