Draft Grade — Browns
Overall
C+
ValueD
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
A weekend that raised as many questions as it answered. The Browns get a C+. There is conviction, and then there is this. The Browns took Tristan Leigh a full 203 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend.
On value alone, Golday makes the weekend a net positive. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain. The Browns indulged a want in Heinecke while a need in quarterback, cornerback and other spots stayed open.
Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
If Carnell Tate and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick Analysis
Pick6
Rnd1
Emmanuel Pregnon
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Emmanuel Pregnon well ahead of where he belonged. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick24
Rnd1
Carnell Tate
Carnell Tate slipping to Round 1, Pick 24 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick39
Rnd2
Tristan Leigh
Tristan Leigh at slot 39 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick70
Rnd3
Zakee Wheatley
A conviction pick on Zakee Wheatley at the 70th overall pick that the board grades a round light. It fills a real need, too.
Pick107
Rnd4
Owen Heinecke
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Owen Heinecke at defensive back with quarterback, cornerback and other spots open.
Pick139
Rnd5
Mikail Kamara
You do not let an edge rusher like Mikail Kamara reach the Round 5 slot and blink. They did not. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick144
Rnd5
Malachi Lawrence
A straight-up fair deal on Malachi Lawrence at the 144th pick, value and slot in agreement. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick147
Rnd5
Kaleb Proctor
Kaleb Proctor at Round 5, Pick 9 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick204
Rnd6
Jake Golday
The board fumbled Jake Golday all the way to the 204th overall pick, and they scooped it up. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick248
Rnd7
Eric Rivers
Eric Rivers at pick No. 248 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
