Draft Grade — Dolphins
Overall F
ValueC NeedB TradesF FutureB-
The board had answers; the Dolphins had Hemby. Grade: F.

There was a run on nobody at that position, and the Dolphins started one anyway for Roman Hemby, 43 picks ahead of schedule.

They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. The Ponds pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at interior defensive lineman, tight end and other spots. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman.

Quarterback was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.

About as rough as a weekend gets on paper, with interior defensive lineman still staring back at them.

Pick Analysis
Pick28 Rnd1 Olaivavega Ioane
In the Round 1 slot they get a cornerstone up front. A real need, handled.
Pick38 Rnd2 Gennings Dunker
This one needs a full-page explanation: Gennings Dunker in slot 38, miles early. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick43 Rnd2 Akheem Mesidor
Akheem Mesidor in No. 43 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick59 Rnd2 Keionte Scott
They paid a round early for Keionte Scott in the 59th pick, more than the board wanted. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick75 Rnd3 Omar Cooper Jr.
Omar Cooper Jr. in pick 75 is fair value, right on his grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick87 Rnd3 Blake Miller
A big swing on Blake Miller at pick No. 87, well ahead of any board in the building. The roster fit checks out.
Pick90 Rnd3 D'Angelo Ponds
They bypassed pressing needs at interior defensive lineman, tight end and other spots to take D'Angelo Ponds, a cornerback that was not the priority.
Pick111 Rnd4 CJ Daniels
They paid up for CJ Daniels at slot 111 when waiting would have done the job. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick117 Rnd4 Davison Igbinosun
Of all the spots to shop, they chose cornerback. Davison Igbinosun in No. 117 leaves interior defensive lineman, tight end and other spots for later.
Pick149 Rnd5 Bud Clark
Bud Clark in pick No. 149 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick180 Rnd6 Luke Altmyer
They liked Luke Altmyer enough to skip the value, taking him in Round 6, Pick 1. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick227 Rnd7 Roman Hemby
Roman Hemby at pick 227 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
