Draft Grade — Lions
Overall C
ValueF NeedA- TradesB- FutureB-
The Lions landed square in the muddy middle: C.

Call it belief, call it a gut call, but Mitchell Melton at pick 50 is 336 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline. It nets out a thoroughly average C.

Getting Concepcion where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. That linebacker hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.

Cornerback is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it. The back end got a real overhaul.

If Malik Muhammad and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.

Pick Analysis
Pick17 Rnd1 Malik Muhammad
In the 17th pick they get a potential shutdown corner, a steep price for the projection. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick50 Rnd2 Mitchell Melton
Mitchell Melton at the 50th overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick118 Rnd4 Bray Hubbard
Bray Hubbard in Round 4, Pick 18 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick155 Rnd5 Thomas Collins
A wild overpay on Thomas Collins in pick No. 155, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick180 Rnd5 Earnest Greene III
They left a pile of value on the table to take Earnest Greene III this early at the Round 5 slot. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick188 Rnd6 DJ Campbell
A straight-up fair deal on DJ Campbell at slot 188, value and slot in agreement. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick209 Rnd6 Dante Lovett
Dante Lovett at the 209th overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick222 Rnd7 KC Concepcion
The board fumbled KC Concepcion all the way to slot 222, and they scooped it up. A need, and now a little less of one.
