Draft Grade — Steelers

FutureC
A passer of the future in Beck, and a D+, for the Steelers. The Steelers torched the value chart for Matthew Sluka, taking him 103 spots sooner than anyone had him slotted. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D+ is the result.
Getting Stowers where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back.
So much rides on Carson Beck that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.
Pick Analysis
Pick2
Rnd1
Carson Beck
In Round 1, Pick 2 they get their quarterback of the future, though the board says they badly overpaid. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick85
Rnd3
Olaivavega Ioane
Taking Olaivavega Ioane in pick No. 85 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick99
Rnd3
Rayshaun Benny
A real head-scratcher, Rayshaun Benny in the Round 3 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick121
Rnd4
Deion Burks
They let Deion Burks come to them and pounced at pick 121. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick136
Rnd4
Omar Cooper Jr.
Omar Cooper Jr. in the 136th pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The roster fit checks out.
Pick160
Rnd5
Spencer Fano
They will replay Spencer Fano at the 160th overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick213
Rnd6
Eli Stowers
Eli Stowers at slot 213 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick214
Rnd6
Jalon Kilgore
Somehow Jalon Kilgore was still sitting there in the 214th pick, and they pounced on premier safety value. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick224
Rnd7
Jaishawn Barham
Steal is underselling it; Jaishawn Barham at the 224th overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick237
Rnd7
Matthew Sluka
Matthew Sluka at No. 237 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
