Draft Grade — Jets

Flashes of a plan, unevenly run, for the Jets: C.

The Howard Cross III pick is the one that will follow the Jets into the fall. They took him 191 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so.

They banked enough surplus on Helm to cover a lot of smaller sins. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. The roster is better shaped than it was, with quarterback chief among the fixes.

Call it incomplete, and check back in a couple of seasons.

Pick Analysis
Pick38 Rnd2 Howard Cross III
Howard Cross III at pick No. 38 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick42 Rnd2 Denzel Burke
Denzel Burke at slot 42 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick69 Rnd3 Kobe Hudson
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Kobe Hudson. It fills a real need, too.
Pick73 Rnd3 Kenneth Grant
Somehow Kenneth Grant was still sitting there in the 73rd pick, and they pounced on premier interior defensive lineman value. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick77 Rnd3 Isaiah Bond
They paid sticker price for Isaiah Bond in the Round 3 slot, and that is fine. The roster fit checks out.
Pick84 Rnd3 Will Howard
They reached a country mile for Will Howard at Round 3, Pick 20, and the board is aghast. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick162 Rnd5 Ja'Quinden Jackson
They reached into another round for Ja'Quinden Jackson, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick186 Rnd6 Ajani Cornelius
Ajani Cornelius at Round 6, Pick 10 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick207 Rnd6 Gunnar Helm
A top-tier tight end at a bargain, Gunnar Helm in the 207th pick, plain and simple. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
