Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall D-
ValueB NeedB- TradesF FutureB-
The Cowboys got the worse of every deal, and it shows in the D-.

There is reaching, and then there is Malachi Lawrence at No. 112. The Cowboys jumped the board by 34 and dared it to prove them wrong.

They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. It is not that McNeil-Warren is a bad player; it is that the Cowboys had louder needs to answer first.

Leaving wide receiver unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. However the rest shakes out, McNeil-Warren at that price is a win they earned.

In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.

Pick Analysis
Pick8 Rnd1 Caleb Downs
In the 8th overall pick they get an enforcer at safety. Need was not the driver here.
Pick29 Rnd1 Brandon Cisse
In the 29th pick they get an island corner at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick61 Rnd2 Emmanuel McNeil-Warren
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Emmanuel McNeil-Warren adds a safety and leaves wide receiver, running back and other spots untouched.
Pick112 Rnd4 Malachi Lawrence
They reached a country mile for Malachi Lawrence at the Round 4 slot, and the board is aghast. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick150 Rnd5 Aamil Wagner
Aamil Wagner at slot 150 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick177 Rnd5 DJ Campbell
DJ Campbell in pick 177 is fair value, right on his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick215 Rnd6 Keyshaun Elliott
By-the-book stuff, Keyshaun Elliott at the 215th pick squarely in line with his ranking. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick221 Rnd7 Cole Payton
A reach for Cole Payton in pick No. 221; a little patience would have been rewarded. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick225 Rnd7 Miles Kitselman
Miles Kitselman in slot 225 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
