Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall
C-
ValueB
NeedB+
TradesF
FutureB-
A costly weekend of dealing drags the Cowboys to a C-. You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Cowboys did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. For now it grades a C-, with the swing picks left to settle the rest.
For all the activity, running back went untouched, which is hard to explain. The Campbell pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. Getting Stockton where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 6 of 8 of the wish list covered.
In the end, one you will need a couple of seasons to truly judge.
Pick Analysis
Pick12
Rnd1
Mansoor Delane
In the 12th pick they get a sticky cover corner at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick25
Rnd1
Avieon Terrell
Avieon Terrell in the Round 1 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick89
Rnd3
Jacob Rodriguez
A straight-up fair deal on Jacob Rodriguez at No. 89, value and slot in agreement. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick112
Rnd4
Michael Trigg
A reach for Michael Trigg in slot 112; a little patience would have been rewarded. The roster fit checks out.
Pick150
Rnd5
DJ Campbell
They paid a round early for DJ Campbell in pick No. 150, more than the board wanted. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick177
Rnd5
Eric McAlister
They did well to land Eric McAlister in the 177th overall pick, just ahead of his grade. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick215
Rnd6
Gunner Stockton
Value with a capital V on Gunner Stockton in pick 215, a genuine coup. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick221
Rnd7
Keyron Crawford
Keyron Crawford at Round 7, Pick 5 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick225
Rnd7
PJ Williams
PJ Williams at pick No. 225 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
