The Cowboys lost the trade table, and the D tells the story. There is reaching, and then there is Daevin Hobbs at pick 225. The Cowboys jumped the board by 43 and dared it to prove them wrong. A weekend that fought the value and lost, hence the D.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. The wide receiver spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Trading back for volume was the quiet throughline of their weekend.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, wide receiver very much included.
Pick Analysis
Pick12
Rnd1
Mansoor Delane
In pick 12 they get a press-man option on the boundary at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick29
Rnd1
Brandon Cisse
In No. 29 they get a potential shutdown corner. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick62
Rnd2
Derrick Moore
A wild overpay on Derrick Moore in slot 62, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick94
Rnd3
Jacob Rodriguez
They paid sticker price for Jacob Rodriguez in the 94th pick, and that is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick112
Rnd4
Michael Trigg
Michael Trigg at the Round 4 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick150
Rnd5
Aamil Wagner
They reached into another round for Aamil Wagner, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick162
Rnd5
DJ Campbell
The board had cheaper options than DJ Campbell at pick No. 162, and it noticed. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick184
Rnd6
Pat Coogan
Pat Coogan at the Round 6 slot is a conviction pick that outran the value. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick221
Rnd7
Cole Payton
A reach for Cole Payton in pick 221; a little patience would have been rewarded. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick225
Rnd7
Daevin Hobbs
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Daevin Hobbs well ahead of where he belonged. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
