Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall
D-
ValueB-
NeedB
TradesF
FutureB-
The Cowboys robbed the room for McAlister. Final grade: D-. The trade table was where it all came apart. The Cowboys shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill. A D- that will need time and luck to look better.
They will regret leaving running back for another day if the season turns on it. Wagner has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.
Getting McAlister where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and running back is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick12
Rnd1
Cashius Howell
In No. 12 they get a problem off the edge, reach and all.
Pick29
Rnd1
Brandon Cisse
They paid sticker price for Brandon Cisse in the Round 1 slot, and that is fine. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick50
Rnd2
Anthony Hill Jr.
Anthony Hill Jr. slipping to pick 50 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick61
Rnd2
A.J. Haulcy
Value with a capital V on A.J. Haulcy in slot 61, a genuine coup. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick94
Rnd3
Jacob Rodriguez
Jacob Rodriguez at the 94th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick112
Rnd4
Justin Joly
Justin Joly at pick No. 112 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick150
Rnd5
Aamil Wagner
Aamil Wagner at pick No. 150 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick162
Rnd5
DJ Campbell
A reach on DJ Campbell in Round 5, Pick 24; the board had better options right there. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick184
Rnd6
Pat Coogan
Pat Coogan in slot 184 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick221
Rnd7
Jalon Daniels
A reach for Jalon Daniels in the Round 7 slot; a little patience would have been rewarded. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick225
Rnd7
Eric McAlister
Circle this one: Eric McAlister at pick 225 is a fall that decides a draft. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
