A costly weekend of dealing drags the Cowboys to a C-. The war room fell hard for D'Angelo Ponds, and it showed at pick 74: 40 picks ahead of a board that had other ideas.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. The Little Jr. pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at tight end and interior defensive lineman.
They will regret leaving tight end for another day if the season turns on it. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Daniels.
So much rides on Cashius Howell that the real verdict is a season or two away.
Pick Analysis
Pick16
Rnd1
Cashius Howell
In the 16th pick they get a quarterback's worst nightmare, reach and all. More want than need.
Pick27
Rnd1
Anthony Hill Jr.
In the Round 1 slot they get a downhill thumper at linebacker, even if it was a touch early. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick43
Rnd2
Michael Taaffe
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Michael Taaffe well ahead of where he belonged. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick74
Rnd3
D'Angelo Ponds
A wild overpay on D'Angelo Ponds in pick 74, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick116
Rnd4
Earl Little Jr.
A surprising call. With tight end and interior defensive lineman still to address, they spent Round 4, Pick 16 on Earl Little Jr., a safety they were not short of.
Pick178
Rnd5
Mark Fletcher Jr.
They talked themselves into Mark Fletcher Jr. at slot 178, and the board did not agree. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick179
Rnd5
Quintrevion Wisner
A big swing on Quintrevion Wisner at No. 179, well ahead of any board in the building. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick194
Rnd6
CJ Daniels
Nice patience on CJ Daniels, who had no business lasting to the 194th pick. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick218
Rnd7
Roderick Kearney
Roderick Kearney at Round 7, Pick 3 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick228
Rnd7
Jalon Daniels
A clean, defensible pick in slot 228 with a little surplus value in Jalon Daniels. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
