Lawson should have been long gone. The Colts pounced, and earned a B. Somebody in No. 72 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Colts sat still while Deontae Lawson, the No. 17 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium.
They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. The Colts indulged a want in Davis while a need in running back, offensive lineman and other spots stayed open.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through running back.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick Analysis
Pick24
Rnd1
Malik Muhammad
In pick No. 24 they get a potential shutdown corner, and a steal at that. Need was not the driver here.
Pick40
Rnd2
Drew Allar
A quarterback of that caliber at pick 40 is the definition of value, full stop. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick72
Rnd3
Deontae Lawson
The board fumbled Deontae Lawson all the way to No. 72, and they scooped it up. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick85
Rnd3
Eli Stowers
They will replay Eli Stowers at the 85th pick for years; that is how good the value is. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick92
Rnd3
Kamari Ramsey
They robbed the room for Kamari Ramsey here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick108
Rnd4
Tacario Davis
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went cornerback with Tacario Davis while clear needs at running back, offensive lineman and other spots sat open.
Pick186
Rnd6
Barion Brown
Fair-plus on Barion Brown, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick221
Rnd7
Aidan Chiles
Aidan Chiles in Round 7, Pick 5 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick247
Rnd7
Jacobe Johnson
Jacobe Johnson at No. 247 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick249
Rnd7
King Mack
Good price on King Mack in slot 249, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
