Draft Grade — Texans
Overall C
ValueF NeedB TradesA FutureB-
Nobody dealt better than the Texans this weekend: C.

The Texans looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Shawn Murphy at the 168th pick regardless, 265 picks early. It washes out to a C, no better and no worse.

The Ponds pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend.

They will regret leaving wide receiver for another day if the season turns on it. The Bowen pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with wide receiver, edge rusher and other spots still on the board.

If Gennings Dunker and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.

Pick Analysis
Pick17 Rnd1 Gennings Dunker
In the Round 1 slot they get a long-term starter on the line, reach and all. A real need, handled.
Pick38 Rnd2 Justice Haynes
Justice Haynes in slot 38 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick48 Rnd2 Rayshaun Benny
Rayshaun Benny at Round 2, Pick 16 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick60 Rnd2 Dante Dowdell
Value said wait; Dante Dowdell in pick 60 says they were not listening. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick66 Rnd3 Aamil Wagner
They talked themselves into Aamil Wagner at the 66th pick, and the board did not agree. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick91 Rnd3 Olaivavega Ioane
Olaivavega Ioane in the 91st overall pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick108 Rnd4 King Mack
A wild overpay on King Mack in pick 108, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick114 Rnd4 Peyton Bowen
Of all the spots to shop, they chose safety. Peyton Bowen in the Round 4 slot leaves wide receiver, edge rusher and other spots for later.
Pick157 Rnd5 DJ Campbell
DJ Campbell at the 157th overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick168 Rnd5 Shawn Murphy
A big swing on Shawn Murphy at Round 5, Pick 28, well ahead of any board in the building. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick230 Rnd7 Cam Calhoun
The board had Cam Calhoun higher than No. 230, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick238 Rnd7 D'Angelo Ponds
D'Angelo Ponds in pick No. 238 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
