Blazing DRAFTING FOR THEJets
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Jets
Overall
B-
ValueB-
NeedB+
TradesB-
FutureB-
The Jets finally solved quarterback, and it carried them to a B-. The Jets spent the pick that matters most on Fernando Mendoza, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. The bottom line is a respectable B-.
The Coogan pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want.
Quarterback is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it. Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick Analysis
Pick3
Rnd1
Fernando Mendoza
In the Round 1 slot they get the arm they will build around at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick18
Rnd1
Arvell Reese
In the 18th overall pick they get a coverage-and-run second-level piece. Need was not the driver here.
Pick34
Rnd2
Kayden McDonald
Kayden McDonald at the 34th pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the interior defensive lineman. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick46
Rnd2
Elijah Sarratt
Elijah Sarratt at pick No. 46 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick104
Rnd4
Emmanuel McNeil-Warren
No drama and no debate, Emmanuel McNeil-Warren went about where he belonged in pick 104. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick176
Rnd5
Xavier Nwankpa
They took Xavier Nwankpa at par in No. 176, which is nothing to complain about. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick178
Rnd5
Monroe Mills
Monroe Mills in Round 5, Pick 39 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick196
Rnd6
Josh Moten
Josh Moten in slot 196 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick205
Rnd6
Pat Coogan
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Pat Coogan well ahead of where he belonged. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick212
Rnd6
Lawson Luckie
Value said wait; Lawson Luckie in the 212th overall pick says they were not listening. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick218
Rnd7
Desmond Reid
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Desmond Reid. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick239
Rnd7
Ahmaad Moses
Ahmaad Moses at Round 7, Pick 23 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
