Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B-
ValueB- NeedB TradesB- FutureB-
The Patriots checked most of the boxes and earned a B-.

The Patriots looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Brett Norfleet at the Round 6 slot regardless, 26 picks early. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.

That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Reese falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.

Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. Nearly every premium pick went to that side of the ball.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the interior defensive lineman spot they never got to.

Pick Analysis
Pick30 Rnd1 Arvell Reese
In Round 1, Pick 30 they get the heartbeat of the defense at a price that makes it sweeter.
Pick62 Rnd2 Caleb Tiernan
Caleb Tiernan at the Round 2 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It fills a real need, too.
Pick94 Rnd3 Anto Saka
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Anto Saka. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick129 Rnd4 DJ McKinney
Value with a capital V on DJ McKinney in the 129th pick, a genuine coup. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick130 Rnd4 Tao Johnson
Fair-plus on Tao Johnson, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick169 Rnd5 Darius Taylor
Nothing to complain about; Darius Taylor went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick191 Rnd6 Patrick Payton
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Patrick Payton well ahead of where he belonged. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick201 Rnd6 Trey Zuhn III
Trey Zuhn III in pick No. 201 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick206 Rnd6 Robert Spears-Jennings
A real head-scratcher, Robert Spears-Jennings in slot 206 is miles ahead of his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick211 Rnd6 Brett Norfleet
Brett Norfleet at the 211th overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick246 Rnd7 J. Michael Sturdivant
A straight-up fair deal on J. Michael Sturdivant at Round 7, Pick 30, value and slot in agreement. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
